Heavy Snow Possible: NWS Issues Winter Storm Warning for Friday Storm

weatherupdateThe National Weather Service office in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4:00a.m. Friday until 4:00a.m. Saturday.

NWS forecasters expect snow will begin by early Friday morning, with a period of heavy snow Friday afternoon into Friday night.

Snow accumulations of 6 to 15 inches west of Highway 395, and up to 6 inches along and east of Highway 395, are being forecast.

Friday morning there will also be a period of high winds out of the southwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Gusts to 50 mph are possible in wind prone sections of Highway 395 Friday morning.

Snow levels will start out near 5,000 feet Friday morning, then lower to the valley floor by late Friday afternoon.

Motorists can expect poor visibility with localized whiteout conditions. Conditions will be dangerous for back country activities and travel on Highways 36, 44, 49, 70, 89, 139 and 395.
