Josephine Unterreiner Obituary

Josephine Unterreiner, 94, died peacefully August 14, at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Reno, Nevada. She was in the care of Hospice and had three children and a granddaughter present at the time of her passing.

The Holy Rosary will be August 27, at 6:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Funeral service will also be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, August 28, at 10:00 a.m.

Josephine was born in Aargau, Switzerland on February 28, 1927. She was the firstborn of her parents John and Josephine Frey who also had one more daughter and two sons.

When Josephine was three years old the family moved to the United States and lived in the San Francisco area. Her father began working as a pastry chef for the airline industry. Tragically, Josephine’s mother became ill and passed from this life when Josephine was ten years old. This began a new life, one of service for Josephine. She took on much more family responsibilities and daily tasks.

Josephine’s father remarried and her stepmother, Veronica, the oldest of 10 children, had a younger brother Cletus. Cletus and Josephine began corresponding and later married. Josephine moved to Missouri and worked with Cletus on the family farm.

In 1951, the young couple and their firstborn child moved to Susanville. Cletus began working at Lassen Lumber and Box and Josephine worked as a waitress. As their family quickly began to grow Josephine then dedicated all of her time to family duties. When her children became older and took on more responsibilities, Josephine was able to spend her time visiting neighbors and friends. Also she loved attending Mass daily and twice on Sundays.

Josephine was budget conscious and enjoyed finding the best deals. Her pantry and freezer were always well stocked. Even though the family experienced their share of challenges and hardships there was always plenty to eat.

Josephine would share how she had five boys and five girls and how she had two sons before the good Lord answered her prayer and blessed her with a daughter. She also shared how thankful she was being born in a time period where there were many conveniences; cars, washers and dryers, and all the such.

She is survived by her sister, Lona Stalker of Arizona, Sons: David of Oregon, Alan (wife Lami) of Idaho, Ken (wife Carolyn) of Susanville, Phil (wife Brenda) of Susanville. Daughters: Mary of Burney, Virginia of Susanville, Judy Waybright of Susanville and Loree Lippsmeyer (husband Brian) of Roseville. In addition she has 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Josephine was preceded in death by Cletus her husband of 55 years, a son Paul and a daughter Marette Wakeman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caring and Sharing, care of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Susanville California.
