Sheriff’s Department Launches 11-Week Citizen Academy

sheriffacademyThe Lassen County Sheriff’s Department is launching a new program aimed at folks who would like to learn more about law enforcement and the day-to-day operation of the agency.

The new Citizens’ Academy is an informal 11-week course in the operations of the Sheriff’s Department and law enforcement in general.

“This is an excellent course for persons interested in learning about the capabilities of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department,” said Academy Coordinator Deputy Vincent Buck, “and what we are doing in our community.”

Each session will be taught by the staff working within specialty areas.

Attendees will gain first-hand experience with SWAT operations, patrol ride-alongs, and police range techniques.

Other topics included in the 11-week course include dispatch, records, civil community policing, narcotics investigation, K-9 operations, volunteer contributions, gangs, major crime investigations, crime prevention, Court Bailiff, crime prevention, Coroner investigations, criminal law, SWAT, use of force, general investigations, jail operations, patrol procedures, contract patrols, search and rescue, the Explorer Program and evidence procedures.

The academy is scheduled to begin on June 17th and Deputy Buck is encouraging anyone interested in the class to register early as class size is limited to just 25 Lassen County students.

The classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 at the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department and applications can be obtained in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Department at 1415 Sheriff Cady Lane in Susanville.

Participants in the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department Citizens’ Academy must be at least 14 year of age, have no felony arrest history and have not been arrested for any charge within the past five years. All applicants will be screened prior to admission into the class.

The cost to academy participants is free.
