Weather Corner: Water Totals Dismal as Lassen Suffers Driest Spring on Record

Dr. Owen Bateson, Susanville’s resident meteorological expert, checks in today with moisture totals that he calls ‘not very spectacular.’

According to Bateson this is the driest spring recorded in the last century.

“We only had .48 inches recorded at the Bateson Observatory on Gold Run Road during May, which is only 42% of average,” says Bateson, “Although we are sitting at 98% of average for the year, most of that precipitation occurred prior to January 1st.”

Eagle Lake has dropped 4.56 inches since April 28th and is now at 5095.06 feet.

Bateson measured the lake level at 3/4 of an inch below the end of the concrete at the South Spalding Marina launching ramp. The north launching ramp has been high and dry for years.

More of a meadow than a marina, the water now falls short of the boat launch ramp forcing boaters at Eagle Lake to use an alternate low-water ramp installed by the Forest Service at the end of last season.
