Why We Love This Place Wednesday: A Lassen County Fall

By Terra Avilla

Ahh the brisk fall air. That time of year when it is freezing in the morning and by the afternoon the sun shining on your face warms you right up! This time of year in Susanville is just my favorite. My all-time favorite.

For this week, I couldn’t narrow down to just one thing. There are sooooo many things that make my heart happy and without further hesitation I will share some of them with you.

I know I have written about Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch before, but this is the first time as a mom, I have gotten to go on an actual Wemple’s Pumpkin Patch field trip and there’s just something about seeing it through this paradigm that warms my heart.

The kids were so happy to learn about the difference between a squash and gourd. It was almost comical.

To be fair the field trip wasn’t the only time I went to patch this fall. My husband and I also braved the patch with an onslaught of baseball boys, many of whom had never been to a pumpkin patch before and another handful of boys who had never had a Carmel apple before.

They were pleasantly surprised to say the least.

Another favorite activity of mine this year is the annual Dancing for a Brand New Me. It’s just something that makes me love this time of year.

Not only did I get to see my wonderful friend Kassie constantly, but I was also lucky enough this year to host the event with my all-time hero, Jeremy Couso. And let me tell you… despite how easy he makes it look… it is difficult.

Nonetheless, it is an event that brings our community together and is synonymous with a Lassen County Fall.

Lastly, what would be an October in Lassen County if we didn’t mention the ever-iconic Uptown Trick or Treat? The time of the year when all our little ghouls and goblins gather for box car races, candy, dancing, more candy and costume contests?

Every year it’s a whole lot of chaos but also feels a whole lot like Lassen County. Seeing all the Uptown Businesses at their booths, Giggling over the great costumes. Catching up with friends. Going home with pounds and pounds of candy. All of it.

I just love it and I know many of you like me, believe that it is one of the many reasons I love where we live!
