Lassen National Forest Implements Restrictions as Fire Danger Becomes Critical

The Lassen National Forest is implementing Fire Restrictions. Due to the seasonal drying of forest fuels and the increasing risk of wildfires, the current and forecasted weather indicates that hot and dry conditions will continue throughout the summer months and fall.

“It’s critical that we reduce the potential for any additional fire starting during this period of drought and high fire danger,” said Deb Bumpus, Forest Supervisor, LNF. “These Fire restrictions are an essential tool to help prevent or limit human-caused wildfires.”

LNF Fire Restrictions include:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, except in the Developed Recreation Sites
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within a Developed Recreation Site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material
  • Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with an open flame
  • Operating an internal combustion engine, except a motor vehicle, outside of the Designated Recreation Sites

Exemptions are:

  • Persons with a permit from the Forest Service specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission. Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are not exempt from the prohibitions listed above. However, persons with a valid California Campfire Permit may use a portable stove or lantern using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel
  • Any Federal, State, or local officer or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty
  • Persons with a Special Use Permit from the Forest Service for a recreation residence on the Lassen National Forest are exempt from Prohibition Nos. 1, 2, and 4, only at their recreation residences
  • Persons with a valid Forest Service fuelwood permit are not exempt from the prohibitions listed above. However, persons with a valid Forest Service fuelwood permit may use a chainsaw to cut fuelwood, provided that the completion of the cutting complies with the permit’s terms
