NWS Weather Bulletin: Get Ready! Powerful Winter Storm Forecast to Hit Tonight

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning, urging residents to prepare now for heavy snow, wind and dangerous winter conditions beginning tonight and continuing until Tuesday afternoon.

Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches for communities along Highway 395, and 2 to 5 feet west of Susanville. Winds will be gusting as high as 50mph at times.

The warning is for residents in Lassen, eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties from 10:00 this evening until 4:00p.m. Tuesday.

NWS forecasters say travel could be exceedingly difficult, perhaps impossible, due to heavy snow and whiteout conditions. Winds may damage tree branches and fences. Secure holiday decorations to prevent them from blowing away.

Here in the Honey Lake Valley, and other elevations below 5,000 feet, we could see periods where rain mixes with snow on Sunday and Sunday night.

Avoid travel, if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for prolonged delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water, and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.

The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
