Fire Department Investigating Vegetation Fire Near Susan River

A swift response from the Susanville Fire Department, and a collaborative effort with multiple agencies, prevented a brush fire near the southern city limits from gaining headway Monday afternoon. At approximately 2:30p.m., SFD units rushed to the scene behind McDonald’s, where the fire was initially reported.

Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 628 reported smoke in the area behind Safeway, near the Susan River Bike trail. It was then observed that the fire was on the old Mill Property and had jumped the river into the city.

“E-628 with assistance from Cal Fire and Lassen National Forest, deployed hose lays to stop forward progress and contain the fire,” explains Fire Chief James Moore.

“Forward progress was stopped, crews cut hand line and performed 100% mop-up. The fire was extinguished at just over an acre.”

According to Chief Moore, the cause of the fire was determined to be human-caused and is currently under investigation. There were no firefighters or civilian injuries.

The Susanville Fire Department was assisted by Cal-FIRE, Lassen National Forest, Janesville Fire Protection District, Susan River Fire Protection District, Susanville Police Department, and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department.
