The 3rd concert in the Susanville Symphony’s 2012-2013 10th anniversary season is quickly approaching. “Celebrating the Concerto” coming February 15th and 17th will be showcasing solo musicians accompanied by their orchestra. These musicians are all expertly trained on their instrument and this will prove to be one of the Susanville Symphony’s finest concerts to date.
“Typically, our February concert is the most classical of our concerts,” said Dana Hirsche, Executive Director for the Symphony.
A concerto is a piece written for orchestra and a soloist and the symphony has built this concert around that. They are featuring some of their favorite concertos with some very seasoned musicians.
Oliver Leitner, who is 12 years-old and the youngest performer, is going to wow the audience with a Mozart Violin concerto. He lives in Reno with his family and has been taking violin lessons with Carol Laube since he was 3 years old. He is a two time winner of the junior strings division of the Reno Philharmonic Youth Concerto Competition and at 10 years of age, he played at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
The rest of the talented line-up includes Johnny and Peter Lenz who will be playing the Vivaldi Double Cello Concerto. Ray White is playing the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, Sheri Hagen is playing Concertino for Flute, Tianna Heppner- Harjo is playing the Viola Concerto that Ben Wade wrote and Liudmila Mullin will be singing two pieces from Elgar’s Sea Pictures. Every piece the symphony will play at these performances will feature the orchestra and a solo musician.

“We have had a great 10th anniversary season, so far, with both the Swing Band and Christmas concert selling out, “said Hirsche.
Other things to look forward to this season include the Susanville Symphony Choral concert on March 23rd, a Composition Competition Concert in April, an added Swing Band concert fundraiser on May 19th and our Pops Concert in June.The symphony has also partnered with the Assembly of God Church, The Lassen County Superintendent of Schools and the Reno Phil to bring the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra performing for the local schools on April 26th at the Assembly of God Church.
“We work very hard to fulfill our mission, infusing classical music into our community.” said Hirsche.
