The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Some random thoughts from me:

Watching Sofia meet her senior year milestones is taking a toll on me. Maybe it’s because she’s a girl. Maybe it’s because she’s the baby. I don’t know, I just keep seeing her as a shy and sassy 5-year old and my heart can’t take it.

While she performed with the Little Grizzliettes last week, I kept looking for her amongst the little ones.

When she appeared on the senior float as a pirate holding the queen hostage, I saw her as a freshman with phone in hand as she answered calls for the Ghostbusters.

Her senior photoshoot with Karen Westfall brought back memories of little sister’s first day of Kindergarten. Her brothers kneeling next to an excited little Sof.

Today is her last home Field Hockey game. I’ll probably be thinking about her U-6 soccer team where her shorts were so long they met her shin guards. Head full of curls and a big smile on her face.

Then there’s Dancing For a Brand New Me. I’m so excited to perform again. We’ve been working for months and it’s all coming together beautifully. I’ve had a great time hanging out with the other stars. Stacey Bauer, Ellie Brown, Prairie Houck, and I all end up backstage together and it’s turning into quite the party.

I’m already missing our Sunday afternoon dance practices and group texts.

Celeste, Nicomi, and Seanne have poured their hearts and souls into this show. There is dance for everyone, from Latin to lyrical, hip hop to swing. Each dance tells a story that you will also connect to. It’s incredible to watch these stories unfold with no words being said, just movement, expression, and music.

Last week, I watched Seanne as he walked through one of his numbers without his partner. He is so talented, that it almost looked like she was there, in that Shannon-shaped space beside him.

My story is simple and totally selfish. I wanted the drill team to dance with me four years ago and it didn’t work out. I always wondered how it would have been different. Now I get to find out!

Tickets are on sale for our shows on Friday at 7:00 and Saturday at 6:00! Stop by Margie’s or Zaengle’s because you know they are going to sell out.

Had to take a minute to check out the clouds outside. Autumn is so dang glorious in Lassen County! There has been an abundance of juicy apples and pears on our trees. I guess that’s what happens when we have a real winter.

Does that make me sound old? Or just experienced?

I love that we are into the holiday season, but with a quarter of Sof’s senior year down, I wouldn’t mind if time slowed down.

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
