Fire crews from the Bureau of Land Management will conduct several prescribed burning projects in Lassen and Modoc counties during fall and early winter.
Alturas Field Office crews plan to begin a juniper thinning and burning project in the Hayden Hill area, about 50 miles north of Susanville, Wednesday, October 30th. The burns, designed to improve habitat for sage-grouse, will be conducted within a 500-acre project area.
In the coming weeks, the Alturas Field Office plans to burn piles of brush and limbs near the eastern Shasta County community of Cassel. The piles were created during construction of a shaded fuel break west of the community. The slash piles are within a 33-acre project area.
A pile burning project is also planned for the Ash Valley area of northern Lassen County. The piles were created during timber sale and biomass projects, including work conducted in cooperation with the Lassen Fire Safe Council.
The BLM Surprise Field Office in Cedarville plans to conduct the 44-acre Big Bally broadcast burn about 15 miles east of Fort Bidwell, and the Starvation Burn, near Dodge Reservoir, about 19 miles east of Madeline in Lassen County. Both are designed to improve aspen stands by removing litter and dead material.
Projects will be ignited only when weather conditions allow for safe and successful burning and smoke management.
