The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued both a Winter Storm Watch and a Special Weather Statement warning northeastern California and western Nevada residents to expect heavy rain and significant snowfall above 5,000 feet between Wednesday and Thursday night.
The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued both a Winter Storm Watch and a Special Weather Statement warning northeastern California and western Nevada residents to expect heavy rain and significant snowfall above 5,000 feet between Wednesday and Thursday night.According to the NWS moderate to heavy rains and mountain snow will develop here in northeast California Wednesday night and will continue into late Thursday evening.
Above 5,000 feet snow accumulations of up to one foot are possible and up to 6 inches are expected east of Highway 395.
Snow levels will start out at around 7,500 feet on Wednesday, dropping below 6,000 feet after midnight and down to 5,000 feet Thursday morning.
Southwest winds are expected at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30.
“This Winter Storm Watch is intended to serve as a heads up that travel over northeast California passed will be impacted by this winter storm,” added the alert, “Expect delays… and consider planning alternate routes or adjust travel times to avoid the heavy snow.”
California 49 over Yuba Pass and Highway 36 over Fredonyer Summit will be impacted.
There is a potential for significant snow accumulations that may create hazardous winter driving conditions.
Heavy rainfall is possible in western Nevada Thursday with light snows Friday morning.
Deep moisture associated with this storm will bring heavy rains to portions of the area but according to the weather service the location and timing of the cold front and heaviest precipitation are still uncertain.
