For a limited time, from March 27th until April 18th, the Almanor Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest will make firewood from felled hazard trees available at Potato Patch Campground on Highway 32 in the Deer Creek canyon.
Before traveling to the campground to collect the wood, please note the following requirements and restrictions:
- A valid wood cutting permit is required to cut and remove the firewood. Additionally, a copy of the authorization letter from the Almanor District Ranger must be in possession during cutting. Permits and copies of the authorization letter are available at the Almanor Ranger District office located at 900 E. Highway 36 in Chester.
- Prior to leaving the wood cutting area, all firewood must be tagged with completed accountability sheets.
- Only wood already on the ground is available as firewood; no tree felling is allowed.
- Vehicles must stay on established roads and camping spurs.
- Removal of barriers or any other feature (e.g. tables, fire rings, etc.) is prohibited.
- Wood cutting is permitted only inside the specified campgrounds; the rest of the Highway 32 corridor is closed to wood cutting.
Campgrounds in the Highway 32 corridor will officially open with full services for fishing season on Friday, April 25th. If conditions allow for opening the campgrounds early, these dates may change.
