A SusanvilleStuff History Feature
by Jeremy Couso

While watching the HUSA sponsored Coffin Races on Main Street last Friday during the uptown Safe and Sane Trick or Treat event I was reminded of some neat pictures we had uncovered a few years ago while digitizing vintage film negatives for the Lassen Historical Society.

The medium-format negatives were part of a small cache of Eastman’s Studio’s photographs held in a collection at the Susanville museum. In those photos were these nifty (and quite rare) scenes of a Boy Scout sponsored soap box derby on Main Street in 1946. The starting line was just about where County Cleaners is today, with the finish line at Weatherlow street.

If you remember this derby, or know the names of any of the folks in the photos, please send us an email at [email protected] and let us know!
