NWS Weather Alert: Approaching Storm Triggers Wind Warnings

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory in effect from 10:00a.m. this morning to 4:00a.m. Friday and then a High Wind Warning will be in effect from 4:00a.m. Friday to 4:00a.m. Saturday.

Despite the fact that our weather is calm and peaceful (and quite warm) this morning forecasters from the NWS in Reno are expecting winds to increase beginning at 10:00a.m. with the strongest winds from the system predicted to hit northeastern California between sunrise Friday and sundown Friday evening.

Sustained winds today will be out of the southwest at 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.

By Friday morning winds will increase to near 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph. Local gusts to 85 mph are possible in wind prone areas between Susanville and Reno along Highway 395. These strong winds will create dangerous cross-winds.

The NWS reminds area residents that damage to trees, power lines and property is possible with winds of this magnitude. Travel will become hazardous for high profile vehicles and drivers should use extra caution and remain alert for sudden gusts or cross-winds.
