Janice_Heid_Obituary_PhotoJan Heid was a selfless, caring, and thoughtful soul who enriched the lives of all who knew her. A loving mother and caring guardian of animals, she leaves behind a legacy of joy and happiness.

The daughter of Albert Beck and Gertrude Jane Beck, Jan was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up in Castro Valley and Carmichael. She graduated from UC Davis and Golden Gate University law school and worked as an attorney for more than 20 years, specializing in family law. She moved to Susanville in 1996, drawn by the wide open spaces and her love of the outdoors.

She served as deputy county counsel for Lassen County until 2002. After her retirement from law, she worked as executive director for the Lassen Land and Trails Trust (LLTT) until 2008. While there, she established Nature Camp—a week-long outdoor education program for elementary school students and one of her proudest accomplishments at LLTT.

She possessed boundless curiosity and was an avid reader throughout her life, with a deep interest in California and Western history. She pursued a passion and remarkable talent for oil painting in her later years—her favorite work was an award-winning portrait of her beloved canine companion, Ellie ‘the best dog ever.’

She cherished her children and grandchildren and will be profoundly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her life partner, Sid Bean; her sister, Marsha Lewis; her brother, Alan Beck; and her two sons, Matthew Jacob Heid and John William Heid.

Jan asked that memorial gifts and donations be made to the Lassen Land and Trails Trust, PO Box 1461, Susanville, CA 96130, (530) 257-3252, www.lassenlandandtrailstrust.org; and the Lassen Humane Society, PO Box 1575, Susanville, CA 96130, (530) 257-4555, www.lasssenhumanesociety.com
