Last week’s snowstorm created near-perfect conditions at Lassen Community College’s Coppervale Ski Area between Susanville and Westwood on Highway 36. The ski hill is in full operation, with a variety of classes being held on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Coppervale has enough groomed snow for some terrific downhill fun and features 8 spectacular trails, a terrain park, a half-pipe and over 700 feet of vertical drop.
Whether your forte is downhill, cross country or snowboarding, Coppervale has something just right for you and the family; trails for various skill levels, a face, forest runs, a bowl and a newly created terrain park. The slopes are groomed to accommodate less advanced skiers and snowboarders.
Established in the late 1930’s as a club, by citizens of Westwood and Susanville, the original lift was a rope tow run off the rear wheels of a car chained on the top of the mountain. The first person up in the morning hiked up with gas and started the engine.
Lassen College took over the ski area in the 1960’s and started the first official ski classes. The rope tow engine was moved to the bottom of the hill and refitted with a new engine and other modifications.
In 1977 the Poma lift was installed to provide service to the summit, where skiers have access to almost 740 feet of vertical drop.
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays lifts are in operation between 9:30 to 4:00. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the lift are in operation from 1:00 until 4:30pm.
Daily lift tickets for Tuesday and Thursday are $20. On Saturday and Sunday a full day lift pass is $25; a half-day pass is $20; a punch card with 8 lift tickets is $120. Children 6 and under ski for free with an adult. Season passes are available for purchase. A Family Pass is $350, a Student Pass is $150 and an Adult Pass is $175.
