There is a big change in the weather about to happen here in the northeast corner of the state – weather forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno are expecting high temperatures to reach as low as 22 degrees below normal this weekend, with gusty dry winds prompting a Fire Weather Warning.
Red Flag Fire Weather Warning
A Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 1:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. Friday for gusty winds and low humidity for northeast California and far northwest Nevada.
Affected areas include fire zone 270 Surprise Valley California, fire zone 278 eastern Lassen County and fire zone 458 northern Washoe County.
Friday afternoon forecasters expect westerly winds from 15 to 25 with gusts up to 40 mph. Along with the windy conditions Friday’s humidity will start out at 10 to 20% increasing to 20 to 25% through the evening. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.
The National Weather Service recommends that area residents avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation such as yard work, target shooting or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.
