The Susanville Police Department is currently investigating nearly a dozen cases where persons are passing third-party counterfeit checks at local businesses. According to Lieutenant Matt Wood the cases first started appearing in June, with bogus checks being reported as recently as August 4th.
“The checks are all similar and all appear to be printed business checks from local businesses made out to individuals,” explains Lieutenant Wood. “The checks are printed on non-existing account numbers from local banks. Often the check will contain a printed memo indicating it was for some type of pay period. ”
Wood said that the checks all have a printed electronic signature, the most recent being the name of Ray Rice. Generally, the person cashing the check will show identification matching the name on the check when asked.
The police department is advising local businesses to be very careful in accepting any third party checks and to report any suspicious attempts to cash these checks to the police. Whenever possible, it is always advisable to call the business who issued the check to confirm its legitimacy.
