October is Head Start Awareness Month: The $2 Per Child Campaign

headstartAlong with Head Start programs across the nation, Sierra Cascade Family Opportunities is honoring Head Start Awareness Month. October was first proclaimed Head Start Awareness month by President Ronald Reagan on October 22nd, 1982. Since that time October has been a month for communities like ours to celebrate the life changing impact of Head Start.

Sierra Cascade Family Opportunities provides free Head Start and Early Head Start child development programs for children from birth to age 5 and pregnant mothers. The center-based programs offer high quality learning in a classroom environment while the home-based programs offer home visiting services for children to learn and flourish in the natural environment of their home.

A comprehensive approach is provided for all children and families with a focus on school readiness, health and nutrition and family involvement. Services are offered to children with disabilities along with social services to support families as a whole.

The $2 Per Child Campaign

In honor of Head Start Awareness Month this October, Head Start programs are launching the $2 Per Child campaign. The $2 Per Child campaign was created to raise the funds needed to support advocacy by the California and National Head Start Associations, on behalf of at risk children and families. Sierra Cascade Family Opportunities hopes to raise $2 for each of the 230 children enrolled in our program.

For every $2 collected, one dollar goes to CHSA advocacy and one dollar goes to NHSA advocacy to ensure that children and families have a voice in the halls of congress, the state capitol and the media.

According to SCFO Head Start, many children in our community are living in poverty and are in desperate need of the opportunity for success that Head Start and Early Head Start offer. CHSA and NHSA’s advocacy efforts raise awareness of their need and help to keep the window of opportunity open to more and more children.

To make your tax deductible contribution, you can send or drop off your donation to Sierra Cascade Family Opportunities Fiscal Office at 65 N. Union St, Susanville, CA 96130 or visit www.chsa.org.

For more information on how to enroll your child in Head Start or Early Head Start call 1-800-404-1242. Applications are accepted year round in Lassen, Plumas, and Modoc counties.
