sheriffupdateA Westwood man is in custody today on charges ranging from Kidnapping to Resisting Arrest after a Westwood Deputy and his K-9 were forced to pursue the armed suspect on foot through dense brush.

According to LCSO Captain Kevin Jones, in the early morning hours of November 13th, deputies responded to Westwood to take a report of a possible kidnapping and battery of a 40 year-old female. The suspect was identified by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office as 36 year-old Westwood resident Wayne Cramer.

“Approximately 4:30p.m. on the same day,” explained Captain Jones, “Lassen County Deputy Dustin Russell and his K-9 Brinks were patrolling Westwood and were alerted to a location of Cramer.”

When Deputy Russell confronted Cramer, the deputy discovered he was armed with a knife and incredibly agitated. After ignoring Deputy Russell’s initial commands, Cramer ran away on foot. During this ordeal, multiple Sheriff units, California Highway Patrol and Fish and Game Officers responded to assist.

“After locating Cramer in a densely brush area,” said Jones, “he continued to ignore the Deputy’s commands.”

Based on the circumstances of the incident, Deputy Russell deployed his K-9 Brinks to assist in the apprehension of the suspect. Brinks is trained in both protection and drug detection. Cramer continued to resist arrest and was eventually subdued with the help of Brinks and other non-lethal protective equipment.

Cramer was eventually booked at the Lassen County Jail on charges of Kidnapping, Robbery, Assault with a Deadly weapon, Battery of a Cohabitant, Possession of a Controlled substance and Resisting Arrest. His bail was set at $62,500 and he is was scheduled for arraignment in the Lassen County Superior Court this afternoon.

“We are very pleased that the suspect is in custody and our staff, the personnel involved, and Brinks, were not injured,”  said Captain Kevin Jones.
