From October 21st – 23rd 2016 the Lassen High School Cadet Corps had their first annual bivouac; seventeen Cadets attended. It was a great success!
We began with a two-mile hike in. Our Bivouac was a survival camping experience for all of our Cadets to learn techniques for mountain wilderness survival.
Our first class was Field Sanitation where cadets had the opportunity to learn from Master Sergeant Vincent about the proper ways to set up field restrooms, how to combat potential biohazards, and water purification methods.
Emergency First Aid was our second class where our battalion commander, Nathan Calvert, taught Cadets rescue carryout methods, how to splint a fracture, and how to stop bleeding.
After Emergency First Aid, Cadets completed a two-hour, rigorous, orienteering course created by Bryan Boyer where Cadets learned to shoot azimuths and traverse obstacles. They also learned how to build survival shelters thanks to Cadet First Class Nathanial Howard and Cadet Kline. They were taught various kinds of shelters and when/where they would be most effective.
Cadets ended the last day of Bivouac with a course taught by Cadet Sergeant Marco Prado on survival traps and snares, to able to catch small animals such as squirrels and rabbits with and without bait. We ended the trip with a two-and-a-half-mile march and we expect to have an amazing bivouac next year.
