Great Basin Science Synthesis Discussion Continues for Lassen and Modoc National Forests

forestserviceupdateOn December 8th The U.S. Forest Service invited the public to help shape the science synthesis for the Great Basin/Modoc Plateau portions of the Lassen and Modoc National Forests and received a lot of useful public input. This document will become the science foundation for the Forests to revise their Forest land management plans and officials are still looking for your input.

“Many of you joined us in Susanville to discuss the Lassen and Modoc National Forests science synthesis – thank you,” said LNF Public Affairs Officer Joyce El Kouarti. “As we discussed, the two forests are developing the synthesis in preparation to revise our forest plans.”

Regardless of whether you attended the public forum in person, you can still provide feedback on the science questions that will shape the science synthesis.

From now through January 8th, 2017, the Forest Service would like to hear from you in one of two ways. You can E-mail your input to [email protected] or mail your responses to:

Dr. Kas Dumroese,
Great Basin Science Synthesis Team Leader
1221 South Main Street
Moscow ID 83843.

So what happens next?

The scientists developing the science synthesis will review and consider the feedback they receive as well as any other topics the public or Tribes recommend the researchers consider. The team will then finalize the guiding topics and questions and develop a draft science synthesis. The draft science synthesis will be released for public and peer review before being published as a final general technical report.

The “Great Basin Science Synthesis” will focus on areas of both forests not already addressed by the Northwest Forest Plan area science synthesis or the Sierra Nevada Science Synthesis. The combined results of these three science-based documents will provide the scientific foundation for how the Lassen and Modoc revise our forest plans. Scientists from the Forest Service’s Western Center for Native Plant Conservation and Restoration Science will develop the “Great Basin Science Synthesis”.
