An integral part of learning is having a library available for students, teachers and parents. Although schools generally have libraries, it’s not unusual for small rural schools to have a very limited assortment of materials. And while many people have access to the wide variety of resources available on the Internet, not everyone has that opportunity.
It’s imperative to ensure that local libraries are available to those without access and those who love the familiarity of holding a bound book in the hushed atmosphere that we have, for generations, held so dear.
To make that a reality, the Fort Sage Family Resource Center (a part of non-profit Communities United for Children and Families) in Herlong has worked long and hard to bring the local library up to speed, and on September 23rd, a Grand Re-opening was held. Ingram Family Farms, Inc. was on hand to barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs for attendees and provide sodas while coffee and donuts were available inside.
Even the Sierra Army Depot Commander, LTC Benjamin Johnson (and his family), stopped by to welcome the library back to the community.
The remodeled library features computers, books, magazines, periodicals, everything you could want or need. A brand new Kids Reading Room is a welcome area for youngsters to hear their favorite stories, read by volunteers, while thousands of books await the avid reader.
For students, there are plenty of reference works to help with their studies and computer stations as well.
Throughout, artwork adorns the walls, provided by local artists, inviting everyone to enjoy this beautiful haven. There are also plenty of sitting areas and a place to join others for a cup of coffee while visiting.
Not a day goes by that someone doesn’t focus on education as the means to success. The Herlong Community Library stands ready to deliver. Staffed by volunteers who are invested in their community, it’s a safe haven for those who need a quiet space to read, learn, reflect or just take time out from a hectic schedule.
While hours of operation are limited to availability of volunteers, more will be added as volunteers sign on. This truly is an endeavor most deserving of that effort. If you are interested in being part of this wonderful adventure, contact Janice Gotcher or Courtney Clark, (530) 827-3007.
