Bandits Sought by Local Police
Garage in Susanville Robbed, Watchman Slugged
January 2, 1931
Officers of this vicinity are keeping a lookout for burglars, who, interrupted in the act of robbing the Smith auto garage at Susanville, early Wednesday morning, escaped with $34 in cash, after one of the bandits had slugged Silas Houghton, the night watchman.
The officer was hit over the head with a heavy wrench by one of the burglars whom he surprised while at work, but the watchman recovered in time to see his assailant disappearing through a rear window.
The burglars escaped in a waiting automobile amid a shower of bullets sent in their direction by Houghton. It is believed all of the bullets went wild.
