Meat Cutters Strike is Over

Susanville meat cutter’s strike was settled late Friday when butchers won a $7.50 a week wage increase.
After being out of their shops since last Saturday, the meat cutters started to return to their counters later in the afternoon. The boost will give meat market managers and head eat cutters $92.50 a week.
Apprenticeship was extended from two to three years and wages were prorated accordingly. Under the new scale, apprentices will start at $45 a week for six months, then go up to $75.50 for the last six months of the third year.
The union originally demanded that all fish, poultry, rabbits, meat and kindred products whether fresh, frozen or processed be sold under the butchers. The union had also sought to require a journeyman or apprentice be on hand at all times when meat is sold. These demands were not granted.
