A Roseburg, Oregon woman suffered minor injuries Friday after being dragged a short distance trying to stop her runaway vehicle just east of the Susanville city limits on Highway 36.
According to details provided by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol a woman identified as 58-year old Char Ann Bako was traveling westbound on Highway 36, toward Susanville, when she stopped on the shoulder of the roadway to confirm directions and to stretch for a moment.
As she stepped out of her 2016 Nissan Rogue the vehicle began to roll because the shift lever was still in the ‘Drive’ position.
She attempted to regain control of the car by grabbing the steering wheel and getting one foot into the vehicle as it veered across the highway. When it reached the other side she lost her footing and was dragged beside the car as it descended the embankment south of the highway.
Bako eventually let go and the car continued a short distance further until it came to rest against the wire fence.
She was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center by SEMSA Ambulance for treatment of suspected minor injuries. The roadway remained open and Susanville Towing recovered the vehicle.
