Grappling Bear Family Jiu Jitsu
Grappling Bear Family Jiu Jitsu started offering completely free, women’s-only Jiu Jitsu classes in November. At the time it was only offered twice a month, but there was such a huge amount of interest that they now offer the class every Monday.
“Coach George, the head instructor of the gym, asked if I would be interested in running it, and of course I was,” says Jiu Jitsu instructor Terra Avilla.
“When we decided we were going to offer it, we both agreed that the class should be offered at no charge – EVER.”
Avilla explains that Grappling Bear just want women, ages 12 and up, to come in and train.
“Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, are not just about the physical strength or the techniques. Every time a woman steps onto the mat, she’s not just learning how to defend herself; she’s building confidence, resilience, and really a sense of community.”
Avilla says that the women who come to classes have a wide range of physical capabilities but they all laugh, struggle, and grow together.
“It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone who walked in unsure of themselves leave that day with a completely different demeanor.”
Grappling Bear teaches that it’s not the size of the person in the fight, but the size of the fight in the person.
“Let me tell you, these women have an incredible spirit. They inspire me every day with their determination and support for one another. It’s more than just a martial art; it’s a way of life that empowers us to face any challenge with confidence and grace. Plus it’s a killer workout.”
