BLM Planning Prescribed Burns North of Susanville

The Bureau of Land Management’s Eagle Lake Field Office will be conducting prescribed fire operations in several areas north of Susanville during the fall, winter and spring.

A 500-acre understory burn is scheduled for this fall north of the North Eagle Lake Campground. During the winter months, crews will burn piles of limbs brush in a 45-acre area adjacent to the Stones-Bengard area at the north shore of Eagle Lake.

Both treatments will complete the North Eagle Ecosystem Restoration Project that will help improve plant diversity and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire by reintroducing fire into the ecosystem.

Pile burning is also scheduled for this winter on a 150-acre area one mile northeast of Horse Lake.

Smoke will be visible at the north end of Eagle Lake, along County Road A1, Highway 139, and Highway 395. Projects will be carried out only when the weather allows for safe burning, good fuel consumption, and smoke transport away from communities.

More information is available from the BLM Eagle Lake Field Office, (530) 257-0456.
