CHP Incident: Colorado Man Killed in Highway 36 Traffic Collision

An Aurora, Colorado man was killed Saturday after the big-rig he was a passenger in swerved to avoid a collision on Highway 36 near Phil Dow Road and struck several trees before coming to a stop.

According to information released by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol the two-vehicle collision occurred around 10:30a.m. as an unidentified 18-year old female driver of a 2009 Sedan was entering Highway 36 from an adjacent highway.

At the same time that the sedan was pulling onto highway 36 the driver of a 2017 Freightliner, identified as 32-year old Aurora, Colorado resident Abdullahi Abdirahman, was traveling westbound on the roadway east of Phil Dow Road.

As the sedan entered into the westbound lane in front of the big-rig Abdirahman had to take evasive action in an attempt to avoid the vehicle. As he turned the truck to the left he clipped the sedan, causing it to spin across the westbound lane, onto the shoulder and down an embankment.

The Freightliner turned back to the right, across the westbound lane, onto the shoulder, down an embankment where it struck several trees.

The impact of the collision resulted in fatal injuries to 58-year old Aurora, Colorado resident Randy B. Casados who was sitting in the right front seat of the Freightliner.

This collision is still under investigation. If you have any information or witnessed the accident, you are asked to contact the Susanville CHP Office at (530) 252-1800.
