CHP Report: Motorcyclist Killed in Highway 139 Farm Equipment Collision

A Bellflower, California man was killed July 6th, after the motorcycle he was riding collided with farm equipment on Highway 139 north of Susanville.

Shortly before 11:00a.m., according to details from the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, 51-year old Michael Pennington was driving a Harley Davidson south on the highway at a high rate of speed while, at the same time, 49-year old John Fitzgerald was driving farm equipment north at around 35mph.

“Due to Pennington’s unsafe speed, he lost control of the Harley Davidson as he attempted to negotiate a left curve in the roadway,” explains CHP Public Information Officer Bruce Thuelchassaigne.

The Harley Davidson overturned and crossed over the solid double yellow dividing line, directly into the path of the New Holland driven by Fitzgerald.

In the course of the Harley Davidson overturning, Pennington was ejected from the motorcycle.

“Seeing the motorcycle driving into his lane, Fitzgerald applied a hard brake application to the New Holland in attempt to avoid a crash. Fitzgerald was unable to avoid Pennington, and Pennington collided with the New Holland.”

Pennington suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
