An armed car-jacking suspect who lead California Highway Patrol officers on a 15-mile chase across Lassen County early Sunday morning was taken into custody, along with his vehicle’s two occupants, and turned over to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, according to details released today by the CHP.
At around 7:30 Sunday morning a CHP officer working near McCoy Reservoir on Highway 44 observed a white Dodge pickup which had earlier been identified as a possible suspect vehicle in a recent Shasta County car-jack incident.
The CHP unit followed the vehicle to the intersection of Highways 36 and 44 where he initiated a traffic enforcement stop on the suspect’s vehicle. The driver failed to yield, turning westbound on the roadway and heading towards Westwood at speeds which, according to the CHP, only reached 58 miles per hour.
Air support during the low-speed pursuit was provided by CHP helicopter H-14.
As the vehicle approached County Road A21, the CHP successfully deployed a spike strip and disabled its left front and rear tires.
The pickup slowed to a stop just west of Delwood Street and the CHP conducted a felony stop.
Three occupants were taken into custody, two unidentified women and the male driver. The driver was identified by the CHP as 46 year-old Lakeview, Oregon resident David Allen Schott. Schott was found with a 9mm Ruger revolver.
All occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody without incident and turned over to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office for further pending charges in that county.
