A CHP pursuit which began near Eskimo Hill on Highway 44, and reached speeds of nearly 120-miles an hour, ended Sunday night after the suspect’s damaged vehicle caught fire a block from Main Street in uptown Susanville. The driver of the white Mitsubishi was quickly apprehended after he abandoned the car and fled on foot.
According to details released Tuesday morning by the California Highway Patrol the chase began at around 10:00p.m. Sunday when a Burney CHP officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a speeding violation in the vicinity of Eskimo Hill. As the officer activated the emergency lights the vehicle accelerated away.
The officer followed the suspect vehicle for several miles and eventually lost sight of it when the driver turned off his lights and ‘blacked out’ the vehicle.
Approximately 20-minutes later a Susanville CHP officer located the suspect vehicle travelling eastbound on SR-44 in the vicinity of McCoy Road. The Mitsubishi was clocked at approximately 117MPH as it passed the CHP unit. The suspect blacked out the vehicle again as the officer pursued him.
A Susanville CHP Officer successfully deployed a spike-strip near the intersection of SR-44 and SR-36, but despite damage to the tires the suspect’s vehicle continued eastbound on SR-36 at a high rate of speed, eventually catching on fire as it came into the Susanville city limits.
The vehicle stopped on Nevada Street at North Roop Street and the driver, identified by the CHP as 28 year-old Reno resident Cody L. Khan, fled on foot. A CHP officer located Khan and took him into custody without incident. Khan was being held on $25,000 bail.
The CHP was assisted by the Lassen County Sheriffs Department, Susanville Police Department and the Susanville Fire Department.
