Interim City Administrator Dan Newton announced Wednesday that the Lassen County Superior Court has granted the City of Susanville’s request for a temporary restraining order. The order is part of an effort by the City to halt the planned 2022 closure of the California Correctional Center.
According to Newton, the temporary order prohibits the following acts: “Undertaking any further effort to close the California Correctional Center.”
A formal hearing on continuing the injunction is scheduled for August 17th, 2021 at 3:00p.m. in Department 1 of the Lassen County Hall of Justice on Riverside Drive, in Susanville. The hearing is open to the public.
“This is a great first step,” said Newton, “and we hope it will encourage the Governor to come to the table to discuss this issue with the City of Susanville.”
“As alleged in the City of Susanville’s lawsuit, the California Environmental Quality Act and the California Penal Code require a public process prior to closing a prison. In both cases, the State of California failed to conduct those public processes.”
As written in the restraining order, “The executive branch of the government of the state of California, like the citizens it serves, must comply with the law.”
