Join Lassen Land and Trails Trust this Thursday, May 21st at 7:00p.m. via Zoom to learn about iNaturalist, a tool that can help you explore and share your observations from the natural world.
As part of LL&TT’s Discover Lassen series, Alison Young from the California Academy of Sciences will discuss the iNaturalist initiative, a joint effort between California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society, and teach you how to use this to learn more about the nature in your own backyard and beyond.
iNaturalist helps you record your observations of nature around you, share and discuss your findings with others, and can be used online or via an app for your smartphone.
Have you ever wanted to identify wildflowers or insects? Is there a bird singing in a tree that you would really like to know what it is? iNaturalist can help you do that, and keep track of what you see.
If you give permission, your data can even be used for scientific studies across the world.
LL&TT Project Manager Amy Holmen recommends that in advance of the webinar, participants take some time to go to iNaturalist.org and sign up for an account, or download the app through GooglePlay or the AppStore.
If you have time, you can view this webinar here for some more information and an intro to iNaturalist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlw6x3CmA4U&feature=youtu.be
During the weekend of May 23rd and 24th, Lassen Land and Trails Trust will be hosting a BioBlitz project on iNaturalist for all in Lassen County to participate by gathering as many observations through iNaturalist as possible.
LL&TT will be awarding prizes for the most diversity of species, most records of insects, most unique observation. Remember, iNaturalist is to record wild plants and animals, not domesticated species or pets.
“We hope you will join us on May 21st to learn about this great program!” said Holmen.
