Follow Santa Around the World with NORAD, Google and SusanvilleStuff!

Santa’s big journey has begun and for the 56th year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command will be watching out for him using four high-tech systems to track him and the reindeer; radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets.

According to NORAD’s website, from the moment Santa took off this morning the agency has been using, “satellites positioned in geo-synchronous orbit at 22,300 miles from the Earth’s surface, equipped with infrared sensors, which enable them to detect heat.”

“Amazingly, Rudolph’s bright red nose gives off an infrared signature, which allows Department of Defense satellites to detect Rudolph and Santa.”

We’ve set up a live feed on the front page of SusanvilleStuff, with up-to-the second world views from Google Earth and Google Maps.
