The Soaring Eagle Blue Star Moms have done it again – another Honor Flight journey to Washington D.C. for local veterans to visit their own war memorials. From September 29th to October 2nd, Marvin Houston, Bill Knox, Ray Nadeau and Glenn Hail joined Nevada Honor Flight and embarked on a grand adventure to our nation’s capital.
Marvin Houston of Milford was a Deck Hand in the Merchant Marines during WWII; Bill Knox of Susanville served as an Aviator Crewmen in the Navy during Vietnam; Ray Nadeau of Pine Town served as a Motor Machinist’s Mate in the Navy during WWII; Glen Hail of Susanville was a Caterpillar Operator and Truck Driver in the Navy (Seabees) during WWII.
Honor Flight is a non-profit organization created for the purpose of offering veterans a free trip to see the monuments and our local Blue Star Moms collect the money themselves through various fundraisers. For this trip the group collected $4,000 from the community. Blue Star Mom Christine Boyd, who accompanied the veterans as Guardian on this Honor Flight, had to pay $1,000 out of her own pocket to make the trip.
Throughout their Honor Flight tour the veterans are thanked, recognized and admired for their service. They come home personally knowing how much their country loves them and respects them. Veterans will never forget this gratitude and adoration. To date the Blue Star Moms have sent seven local veterans to Washington.
The Blue Star Moms would like to thank both the great patriots of Susanville and the California Corrections Peace Officers Association for their donations to the flight. Also the Grand Sierra Resort donated free rooms and a dinner for travelers the night before the flight.
If you would like to make a donation to help send more Lassen County veterans on the Honor Flight please send a check or money order to: Soaring Eagle Blue Star Moms 1205 Main Street Susanville, CA 96130. Donations will be earmarked for local veterans to fly out on the Honor Flight Nevada.
