Historical Society Annual Membership Meeting

The Historical Society’s Annual Membership Meeting will be held on Saturday, January 21st at 11:00 in the meeting room of the Susanville Christian Fellowship, 705 Hall Street. All members are strongly urged to attend and new members will be welcome.

The video The Hanging of Isaac Roop will be shown, giving everyone a chance to see the 1994 dedication of Isaac Roop’s portrait in Carson City. Roop was the first governor of the Nevada territory and the painting was hung in the Nevada capital along with 30 other Nevada leaders.

Roop was born in Carroll County, Maryland on March 13, 1822 and made his way west via the isthmus at Nicaragua and arrived in San Francisco aboard the steamship Oregon in 1850. He traveled north to Shasta and in the spring of 1853 built a log building here in the Honey Lake Valley which was first known as ‘Roop House,’ then ‘Fort Defiance’ during the Sagebrush War.

The video presentation will be followed by a potluck lunch.
