The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for higher elevations in our area, in effect from 4:00p.m. this afternoon until 10:00a.m. Thursday morning .
According to the meteorological agency, showers will continue today with a period of moderate to heavy snow between 10:00 this evening and 4:00 Thursday morning.
Snow accumulations are expected to be 4 to 8 inches above 5000 feet and west of Highway 395; 10 to 15 inches at Yuba Pass East of Highway 395; 2 to 4 inches above 5000 feet with up to 2 inches below 5000 feet.
Snow levels start out this afternoon at around 6,500 feet dropping to near 5,000 feet by midnight, creating hazardous driving conditions tonight and Thursday morning. Motorists should be prepared for travel delays on highways 36, 44, 49, 70 and 89. Slick roads are possible along Highway 395 in eastern Lassen County.
The NWS reminds drivers that roads will become slick and hazardous, with snow and ice first developing on bridges and overpasses. Motorists should slow down and use caution.
