Qualifications:
Firefighter I Qualifications
- Two years of fire fighting experience as a volunteer; or one-year experience
in a full-time department
Minimum Required Licenses/Certifications
- Possession of an appropriate California Class B operator’s license issued by the State DMV or ability to obtain within first year.
- Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or ability to obtain within first month.
- Equivalent to completion of California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I
certificate or ability to obtain within first year - EMT-B or Emergency Medical Responder Certificate or ability to obtain
within first year - ICS 100, ICS 200, Hazmat FRO, and NIMS 700
Firefighter I Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Four years of experience in a progressive volunteer fire department or two years of full-time paid fire department experience of a predominately structural nature.
Minimum Required Licenses/Certifications:
*Must have completed all minimum required licenses/certifications listed under
Firefighter I and:
- Must have completed the California State Firefighter I and II programs and possess the certificates
- Possess California State Fire Marshal Certificates, Driver Operator 1A and 1B, Fire Prevention 1A and 1B, Fire Investigation 1A and Public Education 1A
Apparatus Engineer Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Six years of experience in progressive volunteer fire department or four years of full-time paid fire department experience of a predominately structural nature with at least two of the years at the Susanville Fire Department
Minimum Required Licenses/Certifications:
Must have completed all minimum required licenses/certifications listed under
Firefighter II and:
- ICS 300
Salary and Benefits:
The City of Susanville Fire Department offers an excellent benefits package which includes but is not limited to professional and education incentives, merit program, superior employee performance bonus, longevity program, annual uniform allowance, annual physical fitness and wellness program, and a 48/96 work schedule.
The current annual salary for the Firefighter I is $44,484-$70,819,placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience. The current annual salary for the Firefighter II is $47,905-$76,264,placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
The current annual salary for the Fire Apparatus Engineer is$54,200-$86,286*, placement within this range is dependent on qualifications and experience.
The City provides the following benefits:
General Leave:
Vacation: 112 hours accrual in first year
Sick Leave: Accrue 12 hours per month with Sick Leave conversion program to convert unused sick leave to vacation
Holidays: 14 paid holidays per year
Medical, Dental, & Vision Insurance: 90/10 plan provided through Anthem Blue Cross as well as Dental and Vision coverage. The policy covers employee, spouses, and any eligible dependents, with the current employee contribution of $30 per month.
Retirement: The City participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). For legacy members, the benefit level is 3%@50. For new members, the benefit level is 2.7% @57.
Deferred Compensation: voluntary plans available

Hiring Bonus:
To qualify for the bonus, applicants must meet all required qualifications and be able to provide current licenses and certification requirements. The signing bonus of $10,000 will be paid in the following increments:
· $2,500—upon successful employment
· $2,500—upon successful completion of one (1) year probation period
· $5,000—upon successful completion of three (3) years of continuous service
