The Lassen Union High School District will be holding a special training and workshop regarding Assembly Bill 1266, which applies to pupil rights: sex-segregated school programs and activities. Specifically, this law provides a right to participation in activities and use of facilities for the gender with which a student identifies rather than the gender listed on the pupil’s records.
The Assembly Bill amends current Education Code in California which prohibits public schools from discriminating on the basis of specified characteristics, including gender, gender identity, and gender expression, and specifies various statements of legislative intent and the policies of the state in that regard. Existing law requires that participation in a particular physical education activity or sport, if required of pupils of one sex, be available to pupils of each sex.
This bill would require that a pupil be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the student’s records.
The workshop, led by Aimee Perry of the school’s legal firm Lozano Smith, will be held during the regularly scheduled board meeting at 6:00pm on Tuesday, November 10th. Parents, students, staff and other interested parties are welcome to attend. Meetings are held in the boardroom located at 1000 Main Street in Susanville.
The agenda and supporting materials are available on the school’s website at lassenhigh.org, and in the district office at 1000 Main Street, Susanville. Should you have questions regarding the agenda or materials, please call 530-251-1197.
