Hey stargazers! This month is the Lyrid Meteor Shower, the result of the Earth passing through the trail of Comet Thatcher, and everyone is invited to join Lassen National Forest, Lassen Volcanic National Park and the Shasta Astronomy Club for a night sky viewing of the shower at Hat Creek Rim Overlook, April 20th.
The event will begin at 8:00 and will last until 10:00, with a National Park Service Ranger-led star talk and scopes set up for viewing night sky objects.
Participants are asked to arrive at the Hat Creek Rim Overlook by 7:30 to reduce the impact of car headlights as the program gets underway.
Organizers recommend that you bring a flashlight with you (a red light if possible) and wear closed toed shoes as the roads can be muddy this time of year. They also remind you dress warmly, and in layers.
You are welcome to bring some chairs, or a blanket to throw on the ground, and a pair of binoculars.
Parking is limited, if you are interested in this event, please reach out to [email protected] with your group size and number of vehicles you plan on bringing. Please try to carpool to save space for other visitors.
Cloudy and inclement weather may cancel this event, visitor safety is a priority.
Call the Hat Creek Ranger District at 1.530.336.5521 to get directions to the overlook or to find out more.
