Forest Service employees from the Hat Creek Ranger District of the Lassen National Forest met with 4-H Outdoor Adventures Day Campers from Shasta and Tehama Counties July 9th, for adventures that included forestry service-learning, hikes at Burney Falls and exploration of Subway Cave.
The opportunity came by way of the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program which promotes hands-on, experiential learning for youth ages 5-19.
Through an organized event by Ray Dombroski, from the Hat Creek Ranger District, and 4-H Advisor Nate Caeton, campers could explore LNF’s Engine 336, check out firefighting gear and equipment and try their hand at operating a fire hose.
The event provided the chance for an afternoon of outdoor preparedness, conservation and career paths within the agency.
Presenters included PT-32 Devin Magee and Engine 336: Captain Luke Madden, AFEO Daniel Robinson, and Firefighters Bob Freeman, Garrett Schmitt and Mitchell Wallen.
“The LNF takes pride in the opportunity to partner with the University of California Cooperative Extension offices to contribute to the education and development of the next generation,” said LNF Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus. “These adventures create a lifetime of memories and carry the mission and vision of the Forest Service.”
“We look forward to future events with the University of California 4-H Youth Development Program to carry out the Forest Service’s mission of sustaining the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. These partnerships allow the prospect to advance our mission and serve our purpose while collaborating with communities and our partners.”
