Education Coordinator Lassen Land and Trails Trust
Lassen Land and Trails Trust’s Natural Resource Managment Explorer Post 1127 enjoyed a frosty January outing that highlighted the South Side Trail, a new trail running above the Bizz Johnson Trail.
A group of 6 hikers set out from Devil’s Corral Trailhead to connect to the South Side Trail and trekked the +/- 7 miles back to the Trust’s Historic Railroad Depot. The Post enjoyed multiple opportunities to use a dichotomous key (specific to the Bizz Johnson Trail and immediate area) to identify trees and shrubs along the way, while taking in the brisk winter air and picturesque views of the familiar landscape from a different vantage point.
The Explorer post would like to issue thanks to the Bureau of Land Management for their generous contribution of Bizz Johnson Rail Trail Plant Keys and guides. To Lassen Rural Bus for the coordination of our shuttle to Devil’s Corral, and special thanks to Lassen Ski Patrol’s Phil Finkel for teaching alpine first-aid and cold weather preparedness.
If you, or a young person you know, are interested in exploring a career in Natural Resource Management, please attend our Post’s next meeting at the Trust’s Historic Railroad Depot [March 7th from 6-7 p.m.]. For more information about the Natural Resource Management Explorer Post, please contact Jessie Diermier via email: [email protected] or by phone at (530) 257-3252.
