Star Acquires Lassen Ranch
April 15, 1942
Buck Jones, Hollywood western star, this week officially became a resident of the Susanville district, with announcement of his purchase of the George Wingfield country home about six miles south of Susanville, more recently known as “Meadow Brook Farm.” Jones’ announcement confirmed rumors of the sale.
The movie cowboy, in an interview yesterday, said that he and his wife consider the new property their home. His movie career will require that he return to Hollywood later this month to make a picture, making it impossible for them to complete their homemaking here for almost two months.
“It’s something we have wanted to do for a long time and finally are getting around to it.: Jones declared in announcing his plans to raise blooded horses, a small herd of cattle and “a few other things that we will need for ourselves.”
The Meadow Brook contains approximately 1427 acres with a large house built by George Wingfield, Nevada mining man and financier. The property was bought by Jones from Fred T. Abbay and L. R. Cady, both Susanville business men, but the purchase price was not revealed.
After the place was completed by Wingfield a number of years ago it was the show place of Lassen county, stocked with bison, reindeer, pheasants and peacocks. It has a large concrete swimming pool and spacious lawns. Mrs. Jones will arrive here in a few days to supervise remodeling of the house.
