Higher School Tax Advocated
April 16, 1944
The proposal to increase the tax rate of the Susanville elementary school district to the extent of 35 cents per $100 assessed valuations, will be placed before the voters at a special election on April 28th. The increase has been approved by the elementary school trustees, according to Clyde Merton, school principal.
The increased revenue from the change in tax rate will be used for the dual purpose of carrying on recreational activities during the summer for the youth of the community, and for raising teachers’ salaries.
The present rate of taxation is 90 cents per $100 valuation. It is expected the increased rate will result in adding over $11,000 to the budget. Of this sum, $2500 will be used for recreational purposes and the remainder for salaries.
Twenty-eight Susanville elementary teachers will receive salary increases by the proposed change in tax rate. The present monthly salaries of teachers range from $133.33 to $154.16.
It also is expected that the increased salary allotment will reduce the loss in number, and efficiency value of the teaching staff.
