J. D. Mariner Tells of Opportunities of Lassen Town Under New Order
July 2nd, 1913

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Mariner returned to Reno yesterday after spending the Fourth of July at Susanville where they enjoyed the celebration given there on the national birthday. They report that Susanville had one of the finest celebrations they ever witnessed in a town of the size, Visitors came from all the surrounding country and the program included racing, baseball in the afternoon and dancing in the evening.

The Alturas band and the Susanville orchestra furnished the music. Monday evening a concert and faree was given by the Alturas band, followed by dancing.

Mariner, says he believes Susanville to be one of the best little cities in the west with a great many opportunities for enterprising business men. Rooms and houses for rent are scarce and he says a modern apartment house would be a paying investment. There is at present some talk of the erection of a $1000,000 hotel.

The Fernley and Lassen branch railroad is now running by Susanville, Mariner says, and preparations are made for the erection of a brick and stone depot. He learned in Susanville that the freight receipts for the month of June exceeded $50,000.
