Kiwanis in Struggle Over Woman Members
March 10, 1977

The Susanville Kiwanis Club has been threatened with loss of its charter because a women was allowed to join the all-male group, club members disclosed Friday.

Kiwanis International has notified Susanville members that their charter would be pulled if Lassen County Deputy District Attorney Renee Roberts retains her membership in the local unit.

The local public service club invited Miss Roberts to join, and it approved her membership last month.

Susanville Kiwanis club president Dean Luce declined to comment on the situation other than to say the matter “will be resolved internally”.

Miss Roberts said she would resign if the Susanville membership made such a request.

“I was extended an invitation to become a member and I joined,” she said “Of course, I don’t want to see the charter pulled.”
