Prisoner Uses Saw to Escape Susanville Jail
September 26, 1942

Police today conducted a statewide search for Virgil Lewis who escaped from jail here after his wife passed a saw blade though his cell door.

The Lewises, fleeing in a stolen automobile, ran a blockade yesterday near Wendel. When officers closed in, Lewis abandoned both his wife and the car.

Mrs. Lewis, 20, said she was the former Grace Collins of Clatskanie, Org.

Lewis had been held on a charge of passing a worthless check. Allen D. Overholser, 20, arrested with him, was turned over to Linn, Org. authorities.
