Monticola Club honored the organization’s 2021 scholarship recipients at a lunch held April 15th in the Monticola Clubhouse on South Lassen Street. Students receiving the scholarships are recognized for their leadership, community service and academic achievement.
Each year Monticola Club awards three scholarships of $500 each at Lassen High School.
The Spencer Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1959. This scholarship is named in honor of the Club’s founder, Philenda Spencer and her two daughters, Iva Raker, wife of an early California congressman, and Superior Court Judge Gladys Burroughs. Alice Li is the 2021 recipient and will be attending the University of California at San Diego. Li plans a major in political science/public law with the goal of becoming a lawyer.
The Monticola Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Coleton Lewis who plans to earn his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Northern Arizona University. Lewis has also completed his Associate Degree from Lassen Community College while attending high school. He is one of only three students in 13 years to accomplish this.
The Monticola Vocational Scholarship was first awarded in 1984. This year’s recipient is Ronnie Merrill. Merrill will be attending Boise State University majoring in biology and plans to become a certified physician’s assistant.
Brand Satica received the $1,000 Etta Tarry Memorial Scholarship for a graduating Lassen College student continuing his or her education at an accredited college or university. Brand will be attending Boise State University in the fall and focus on business finance.
Monticola Club is a local women’s volunteer community service organization celebrating 109 years of service to our community and has awarded 200 scholarships to local students since 1959. Monticola members have focused on a variety of community service projects including the library, beautification projects, health and safety issues and the HLVRA community swimming pool.
